In a surprising turn of events, a photograph titled 'Grace' has become the sole official state photograph in the United States, and its story is one of perseverance and creativity.
The year was 1918 (or possibly 1920), and Swedish immigrant Eric Enstrom submitted a photograph to a Minnesota contest. The image depicted another Swedish immigrant, Charles Wilden, in a prayerful pose, his head bowed at a table. However, the judges deemed the photo lacking in lighting, leading to its rejection.
But here's where it gets intriguing: Enstrom, undeterred by the criticism, took matters into his own hands. He scratched a window into the negative, adding a subtle play of light onto Wilden's face. With some darkroom magic, he transformed the image, creating an ethereal effect.
A Hit Beyond Borders
'Grace,' as it came to be known, became an instant sensation. Minnesota embraced it as its official state photograph, a unique distinction among all states. Lilah Crow, from the Itasca County Historical Society, shared with CBS News that Enstrom captured Wilden's prayerful pose in Bovey, Itasca County, taking a total of ten photographs.
"People often remark how much Wilden resembles their grandfathers," Crow added.
Bovey holds a special place in the heart of 'Grace.' CBS News noted that visitors to the town can find variations of the photograph adorning benches, bicycle racks, and even a mural on the side of Enstrom's old photo studio.
The Evolution of an Icon
Despite the initial setback, Enstrom continued refining his work. He experimented with color adjustments and even altered Wilden's beard. His daughter, Rhoda Nyberg, took the photograph to the next level in the 1940s by hand-coloring the black-and-white image with oil paints. This version gained immense popularity and was widely reproduced.
Minnesotans hold 'Grace' dear, but its appeal extends far beyond state borders. Critics attribute its universal appeal to the quiet piety it exudes. While the book on the table is actually a dictionary, Enstrom later declared it to be a Bible, adding a layer of religious symbolism to the image.
In 2000, a bill sponsored by Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura for 'Grace' to become the official state photograph passed unanimously. This law ensures that the photograph hangs proudly in the Secretary of State's office in St. Paul.
The Mystery of Wilden and Enstrom
Little is known about Charles Wilden, the subject of the photograph. Wikipedia mentions that he led a humble life as a peddler and resided in a sod house, akin to a Hobbit-hole. Enstrom paid Wilden $5 to secure all rights to the photograph in 1926. Despite historians' efforts, Wilden's story remains largely unknown.
Enstrom, too, has an intriguing tale. He wasn't just a one-hit wonder; he also had the honor of taking the first professional photographs of the legendary Judy Garland.
