The University of Texas men's swimming and diving team is on a roll! They've claimed the top spot in the December CSCAA Dual Meet Polls for the third time this season, solidifying their dominance in the pool.
But here's the real kicker: they achieved this feat without even participating in any dual meets in November! Their record remained unblemished at 2-0 from their October meets, but it's their performance at the Texas Hall of Fame Invite that stole the show.
One of the standout moments was Will Modglin's breathtaking swim in the 100-meter backstroke. He not only set a new American Record but also came tantalizingly close to breaking the 20-second barrier in the 50-meter backstroke, an unprecedented achievement. And that was just the beginning.
Modglin then went on to shatter Luca Urlando's record in the 100-meter backstroke final with a time of 43.26, placing himself among the top three performers in history. His teammate, Hubert Kos, holds the all-time record at 43.20, making Texas a powerhouse in this event.
But Texas' success didn't stop there. The breaststroke group also made waves, with Nate Germonprez leading the charge. He swam an incredible 49.71 in the 100-meter breaststroke, breaking the 50-second barrier and setting the pace for the nation. His teammate, Campbell McKean, isn't far behind, holding the second-fastest time in the country.
Will Scholtz also made his mark, dropping over a second from his previous best in the 200-meter breaststroke to set the nation's top time this season. Germonprez is hot on his heels, sitting in third place.
And it's not just about individual performances. Baylor Nelson, along with teammates Modglin and Cooper Lucas, dominated the 200 and 400 IM events, securing nation-leading times.
The rankings saw some significant shifts, with Arizona State holding onto second place after an undefeated season and Indiana maintaining their third-place position. Cal made a notable leap from sixth to fourth, while NC State soared from 10th to sixth after an impressive performance at their home invite.
Florida State also climbed the ranks, moving up four spots to 12th, knocking on the door of the top 10. Southern Methodist and Princeton made their debut in the top 25 this season, while Virginia dropped significantly to 21st.
