Severe thunderstorms are on the horizon, bringing potential chaos to several areas in South Africa. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings for significant thunderstorms affecting three provinces this Tuesday, urging residents to take immediate precautions.
In particular, individuals residing in central Northern Cape, the far northeastern regions of the Western Cape, and various inland sections of the Eastern Cape should prepare for dangerous weather conditions. The forecast predicts strong winds capable of causing damage, heavy rainfall leading to possible flooding, intense lightning, and even large hailstones.
A Yellow Level 2 warning has been put in place for these regions, signaling serious weather threats. Notably, Upington, Prieska, and De Aar in the Northern Cape are expected to be hit hard by the impending storms. In the Eastern Cape, the threat extends across at least 19 local municipalities, including Dr Beyers Naude, Raymond Mhlaba, Blue Crane Route, Enoch Mgijima, Amahlathi, Elundini, Sundays River Valley, Inxuba Yethemba, and Senqu.
In light of these warnings, SAWS strongly advises against traveling if it can be avoided. People are urged to steer clear of metal objects and secure any loose items outdoors before the storms commence. It is also critical not to seek refuge under trees or tall structures, as these can attract lightning strikes. Additionally, engaging in activities like fishing or golfing is highly discouraged since both fishing rods and golf clubs can act as conductors of electricity, posing serious risks during thunderstorms.
Furthermore, a Yellow Level 1 warning has been issued for damaging winds in the central southern parts of Northern Cape and the northeastern areas of the Western Cape. This advisory reinforces the need for vigilance as these weather systems develop.
