In a surprising move, the Colorado Rockies have bolstered their outfield by trading for Jake McCarthy, a former first-round pick with a promising start to his MLB career. But is this a fair deal for both teams?
The Rockies acquired McCarthy from the Arizona Diamondbacks, sending pitching prospect Josh Grosz in return. This trade within the division raises some eyebrows, as McCarthy, 28, had a standout 2022 season, finishing fourth in the National League Rookie of the Year race. His versatility in the outfield and impressive speed are valuable assets.
However, McCarthy's 2025 season was a different story. He struggled out of the gate, enduring a lengthy slump that led to a demotion to Triple-A. Despite a better second half, Arizona deemed him expendable. Over his five-year career, McCarthy has shown flashes of brilliance, but consistency has been elusive.
The Rockies, meanwhile, part ways with Grosz, who was acquired in the Ryan McMahon trade with the Yankees last year. Grosz had a rough start in High-A Spokane, but his counterpart in that trade, Griffin Herring, thrived. This trade leaves Herring as the remaining piece, set to be tested in Double-A this season.
And here's where it gets interesting: the Rockies' outfield is already stacked with talent, including Brenton Doyle, Jordan Beck, and Mickey Moniak, who were the top three contributors last year. So, is McCarthy the missing piece they need, or is this a risky move? Only time will tell if this trade pays off for Colorado.
