Coventry Dad Fights Back Against 45% School Bus Fare Hike (2026)

A Coventry dad is speaking out against a proposed 45% increase in school bus fares, calling it an unfair burden on parents and guardians. The cost of living is already a struggle, and this hike is simply too much to handle.

Mr. Ambituuni, a father of two, has raised concerns about the upcoming change in bus operators for a popular school route. His daughter currently travels between Coventry and Rugby using the 85 bus operated by National Express, with termly fares costing £165. However, from January 1, Stagecoach will take over the route, and the new monthly fares are set to be £75.60, resulting in a significant increase of 45% over the term.

But here's where it gets controversial... Mr. Ambituuni believes that the new pricing is not in line with the services provided and is urging both Stagecoach and Warwickshire County Council to reconsider. He highlights that the bus serves three schools in Rugby and is a popular choice for many students. With the increased fares, he worries about the financial strain it will put on families, especially with the rising cost of living.

"It's an essential service, and the impact of this fare increase needs to be carefully considered," Mr. Ambituuni said. "I understand that operators need to make a profit, but there must be a balance. The current proposal feels like an unfair burden on parents and guardians, especially when we're already facing economic challenges."

And this is the part most people miss... Mr. Ambituuni suggests that Warwickshire County Council, who offered the contract to Stagecoach, should step in and ensure that the fares are comparable to what National Express offered. He believes that the council has a responsibility to advocate for fair pricing on behalf of the community.

"I think it's important for the council to stand up for the people they represent," he added. "They should ensure that essential services like school transportation are accessible and affordable for all."

The local authority and Stagecoach have been contacted for comment, but as of now, there has been no response. This issue highlights the delicate balance between the need for profitable services and the impact on the community, especially when it comes to essential transportation for students.

What are your thoughts on this proposed fare increase? Do you think it's a fair reflection of the services provided, or is it an unnecessary burden on families? We'd love to hear your opinions in the comments below!
